The Greater Memphis Chamber was founded almost 180 years ago and is the voice of business and the lead economic development organization for Memphis and Shelby County. The Chamber is a private, nonprofit, membership-driven organization comprised of almost 2,000 business enterprises, civic organizations, educational institutions and individuals with a mission to drive the Memphis business agenda for Greater Memphis. The Chamber’s vision is for the Greater Memphis area to be globally recognized as an economic leader in the Mid-South with a global impact that fosters an authentic business environment unique to the soul of this city.
The Chamber provides a variety of programs and services for members including: public policy and government advocacy activities; small business support and networking; communication and relationship building programs and events; economic development activities including site selection services, business outreach, relocation and retention initiatives; Ambassadors program; leadership, entrepreneurial and young professionals programs; regional advancement activities and efforts; education and workforce development programs.
The Chamber has a 44-member volunteer Board of Directors, a 40+-member staff and a 2018 operating budget of $7.3+ million. In an effort to expand the Chamber’s membership as well as secure additional investment for the work of the organization, the Chamber has created the executive-level position of Senior Vice President-Growth to focus on membership and business development. The Senior Vice President-Growth reports to the President & CEO and is a key member of the Chamber’s senior management team and the leader of the 4-member Membership Development Team (this executive is expected to expand the number of staff on this Team). The Senior Vice President has a significant responsibility for generating and sustaining revenue and resources in support of the Chamber’s mission, working closely with the President & CEO and other senior executives. Revenue comes from growing and retaining the Chamber’s membership base, securing sponsorships for Chamber programming, offering high-quality products and fee-based services to the members and the community at-large, advertising revenue for an array of Chamber-based media and fundraising campaigns for economic development and community initiatives.
The Chamber has established several membership levels, each of which come with specific benefits and activities related to the level of investment.
Chairman’s Circle: $25,000 investment and up
Board of Governors: $10,000 to $25,000 investment.
Board of Advisors: $5,000 to $10,000 investment.
Small Business Levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold membership levels ranging from $500 to $5,000, each with specific member activities and benefits. Over 90% of the Chamber’s members fall into the Small Business category.
Other important working relationships include: other members of the Chamber’s executive team, which currently includes the Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer and 5 other Senior Vice Presidents for Chairman’s Circle, Communications & Programming, Economic Development, Public Policy and Workforce Development; other managers and staff members of the Chamber’s 40+ member team; Chamber Board members and other high level volunteers; representatives of current and prospective Chamber members; business, community and public sector leaders.
Greater Memphis region is one of the more dynamic business and cultural markets in the Mid-South region of the country. Located in southwestern Tennessee, the City of Memphis has a population of 690,000, Shelby County has a total population of 928,000 and the regional market which includes portions of Arkansas and Mississippi totals over 1.4MM people. The economy in Greater Memphis is diverse, with key industries including logistics and distribution, manufacturing, headquarters and back office operations, education, healthcare, retail, services, hospitality. The Senior Vice President-Growth will inherit a staff that brings experience and enthusiasm to their roles. This is an outstanding opportunity for a chamber of commerce or association membership executive to play a key role in the continued growth of a successful chamber organization in a dynamic and attractive Mid-South regional community.
Ideal candidate must have a proven track record of success and at least 5-10 years of experience leading the revenue generation, sales, membership development and retention of a progressive and comparably-sized Chamber of Commerce, or related significant business association. He/she could also have experience as the “#2” or other senior-level executive at a larger like enterprise as noted above. Board interaction and experience leading large numbers of volunteers is strongly desired. A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing or a related field is required; an MBA degree is preferred. A graduate of the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Organization Management or Certified Chamber Executive designation is desirable.
