The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce (“the Chamber”) in Glens Falls, NY is seeking a dynamic leader to become its next President & Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”). The new executive will work with an engaged Board of Directors and committed staff to fulfill the Chamber’s mission to be the voice of business in the Adirondack region, and to provide exceptional value to its members. The Chamber serves as the advocate for a multi-county region in upstate New York which includes Warren, Washington, and northern Saratoga Counties, with a regional labor shed population of 300,000. Located within eastern New York’s Tech Valley, the region’s diverse economy includes manufacturing, financial and professional services, higher education, healthcare and tourism. The Tech Valley includes a variety of businesses in the high-technology sector including nanotechnology, microchip circuit manufacturing and digital electronics design. The Chamber has 800+ members and serves a stable business environment in a multi-county regional footprint, with an opportunity to grow substantially. The Chamber’s budget of over $600,000 is generated from members and investors from the Adirondack region along with revenue from Chamber events and programs. The President & CEO of the Chamber reports to the Chair of the 9-member Executive Committee of the Chamber’s 19-member Board of Directors. The CEO is an ex officio member of both the Executive Committee, which meets twice per month, and the full Board, which meets monthly. The CEO will supervise the Chamber staff team: Membership Manager, Marketing Manager, Member Services Coordinator and Finance and Operations Director. Other important interactions include: executives and employees of Chamber member organizations; county and municipal elected and appointed officials; state and national elected officials; representatives of other public and private sector organizations with related community and economic development missions; education officials; members of the media.
The Chamber CEO will oversee and manage all aspects of the organization, with particular focus on maintaining the Chamber’s engagement with leaders of Chamber members, ranging from larger companies to professional service firms, entrepreneurial businesses and healthcare institutions. The executive will drive initiatives to make Chamber membership more valuable and relevant, while also promoting the benefits to the existing and prospective memberships. The CEO will engage in collaborative relationships with a broad public and private constituency, working with other business, public-sector and community leaders with the goal of sustaining and improving the business climate across the region.
In addition, the selected candidate will function as the Chamber’s collaborative team leader and creative thinker—especially regarding strategic direction, fundraising, communication and messaging, and overall program development. This position represents an existing leadership opportunity to help guide the development of the Adirondack region, impact the area’s growth and have a positive impact on quality of life for the community.
The Glens Falls and Adirondack region are located in the eastern part of New York State, north of Albany and along the border between New York and New Hampshire and Vermont. The region covered by the Chamber is home to over 300,000 people. The region is easily accessible via I-87 from the North and South, and I-90 from the east and west, and the Albany International Airport. Major industry sectors in Glens Falls and Warren County include manufacturing (medical devices, pulp and paper, mining, technical materials, and semiconductors), services (banking, insurance, media information and back office), healthcare (Glens Falls Hospital plus Hudson Headwaters Health Network) and tourism/recreation (Great Escape/Six Flags Theme Park, Gore Mountain ski and recreational resort and Sagamore Resort on Lake George).
The Adirondack area is home to recreational, sporting, festivals and cultural activities available year-round. The southern area of New York's Adirondack Park draws adventure seekers and cultural enthusiasts from all over. Lake George is one of the largest lakes in the Adirondacks, extending 32 miles through Warren and Essex Counties. Visitors to the region will find theme parks, ski resorts, performing arts venues, and so much more. Because of the variety of activities and attractions, the Southern Adirondacks is a perfect place to live and work. SUNY Adirondack is the largest secondary school in the area and there are outstanding public schools as well as several private school options.
The Chamber is located in Glens Falls, a small but sophisticated city of 14,700 with a variety of museums, festivals, theater, recreational activities, concerts, as well as great shopping and restaurants. Charming architecture with friendly people are its hallmarks. Glens Falls also is home to the Cool Insuring Arena, which hosts the Adirondack Thunder local hockey team, part of the ECHL minor hockey league. The Arena also hosts concerts, shows and more.
The President & Chief Executive Officer position is an outstanding opportunity for a chamber of commerce, economic development, association, nonprofit or private sector executive to lead and grow a successful regional Chamber organization in a vibrant region of New York State with tremendous potential. The CEO will have the benefit of working with a highly committed and influential Board of Directors. This executive must set a pace and create a vision to tackle existing challenges and take advantage of future opportunities.
Many key private and public-sector organizations in this region have strong, established leadership and they collectively recognize their area is poised for a significant step forward. The person selected for the CEO position at the Chamber will be one of the community’s key drivers for that to occur. The Adirondack region has a track record of supporting important initiatives to move the area forward and the new CEO can count on a dedicated staff and volunteer leadership to support him/her in efforts to elevate the regional community to new levels of success.
The ideal candidate must have a proven track record of success and may come from a variety of backgrounds such as: the top executive of a progressive comparably-sized chamber of commerce, economic development organization, or related significant business association; experience as a “second in command” or other senior-level executive at a larger like-enterprise as noted above; an executive with a strong record of community involvement from a complex private or public-sector entity. Experience serving a regional marketplace along with significant Board interaction and experience leading large numbers of volunteers are all strongly desired.
A Bachelors degree is strongly preferred; an advanced degree in business, law, public administration or related field is desirable. If currently serving in a similar organization, a graduate of the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Organization Management, Certified Chamber Executive designation or Certified Economic Developer designation is desirable.
